Most fridges we replace did not die of old age. They were run hot against a wall, on the wrong setting, with a silted drain and no stabiliser. Here is the routine that avoids all of it.
A refrigerator is the one appliance in the house that never gets switched off. It runs through 40°C afternoons in May, through the damp of the monsoon, and through every evening when the voltage sags. Nobody thinks about it until the day it stops.
The habits below are not complicated and they cost nothing. They are the difference between a fridge that works quietly for a decade and one that is on its second compressor.
Give it room to breathe
This is the most common mistake in kitchens across Sasaram and Dehri-on-Sone, and the easiest to fix. The fridge throws heat out through the coil at the back and out of the sides. Pushed flat against a wall, wedged between a slab and a cupboard, or with a box of old newspapers stacked on top, it cannot.
- Leave roughly a hand's width behind the cabinet and above it.
- Keep the sides clear of tight cupboards.
- Do not store anything on top — not sacks, not a microwave standing on a cloth, not old bedding.
- Keep it away from a gas stove and out of direct afternoon sun through a window.
Every one of these makes the compressor run longer for the same cooling, which shows up on your bill first and in the compressor's life later.
Clean the back coil twice a year
The black grid at the back is the condenser. Coated in dust and lint it cannot shed heat, and the fridge slowly stops keeping up.
Dust is heavy here — anyone living along the Grand Trunk Road through Kudra, Mohania or Sasaram knows what settles on furniture in a week. Pull the fridge out, unplug it at the socket, brush or vacuum the coil and the compressor area, and wipe the floor underneath while it is out.
Do it once before summer, around February or March, and once during the Chhath and Diwali cleaning. That fits the rhythm of the household and covers the two times of year it matters most.
The right thermostat setting
The dial is not a "colder is better" control. Set too low, the fridge cannot keep food safe in a hot kitchen. Set at maximum all year, it runs constantly and ices up.
- April to June, when afternoons cross 40°C, move it towards the colder end.
- Monsoon — a middle setting usually works, but watch for more condensation inside; humidity rises sharply from late June.
- Winter — bring it back towards the middle or lower. A fridge set to maximum in a cold kitchen wastes electricity and frosts up fast.
Adjust it twice a year when you clean the coil and you will remember it.
Defrost before the ice gets thick
In a direct-cool fridge, ice on the freezer plate acts as insulation. Once it is thicker than a finger, cooling below drops away noticeably.
Defrost properly: switch off at the socket, empty the freezer, leave both doors open, put a cloth or a tray at the bottom, and let the ice melt on its own. Wipe everything dry before switching back on.
Never do this: do not chip or lever ice off the freezer plate with a knife, screwdriver or any metal tool. The refrigerant pipes run inside that plate, and a single puncture turns a free afternoon of defrosting into a sealed-system repair that often is not worth doing on an older fridge.
The drain hole, and where smells come from
Clearing the drain
Inside, at the back of the lower compartment, there is a small hole with a channel leading to it. Water from normal condensation runs down it into a tray above the compressor, where it evaporates.
That hole blocks with food particles and, in parts of Rohtas and Kaimur where the groundwater is hard and carries iron, with mineral deposit. When it blocks, water collects inside the fridge and under the vegetable tray, and within days you get a smell.
Clear it gently with a cotton bud or a soft plastic strip. Do not force anything metal down it.
Smells
A smell is almost always one of three things: something spoiled and forgotten at the back, a blocked drain holding stale water, or strong food stored uncovered.
The fix in that order — empty the fridge completely and check every corner, clear the drain, and store cut onion, fish and leftovers in closed containers. Wipe the inside with a mild soap solution, then plain water, and let it dry with the door open for a while before restocking. A fridge that smells even after a proper clean usually has water sitting somewhere you have not found yet.
Power cuts and voltage
This is where fridges in our area actually get damaged.
When the power goes, keep the door shut. A full fridge holds its cold for several hours if it is not opened. Every opening during a cut costs you more than the cut itself.
When power returns, a compressor that tries to restart against the pressure still in the system draws heavy current. That is hard on it, and it is much harder when the returning supply is also low — which on a summer evening in most mohallas it is.
What helps:
- A correctly rated stabiliser, placed where it gets air rather than inside a cupboard. A stabiliser holds the voltage reaching the fridge within a usable range so the compressor is not straining every time the supply dips.
- Its own wall point. Not an extension board shared with a mixer, an inverter or a cooler.
- Proper earthing at that point.
- If the supply is cutting in and out repeatedly, switch the fridge off at the socket and turn it back on once supply has settled.
Loading it sensibly
- Let hot food cool to room temperature before it goes in. A hot pot raises the whole cabinet temperature and makes the compressor work through it.
- Leave gaps between items so air circulates. A packed fridge cools worse.
- Keep the vents at the back of the upper shelves clear of tall containers.
- Do not overload the door shelves with heavy bottles — over years it pulls the door out of alignment and the seal stops meeting properly.
- Open it with a plan rather than standing with the door open deciding.
When to call someone
Call if you hear a new rattle or a loud hum, if the compressor is clicking every few minutes without starting, if the cabinet feels warm to the touch on the outside, if there is water on the kitchen floor, or if you smell anything burning. None of those improve on their own.
Charges for refrigerator service and repair are on the rate list, GST extra, spare parts billed at actual cost after we tell you. We are open Monday to Sunday, 8:00 AM to 6:30 PM on +91 96315 11974, or book on the contact page and we will call back within an hour. The full range of appliance work is on the services page.
We cover Sasaram, Bikramganj, Mohania, Kudra and Daudnagar among other towns — see service areas for the full list.
Frequently asked questions
Move it towards the colder end from April to June, when afternoons here cross 40°C and the kitchen itself is hot. Bring it back towards the middle in winter, otherwise it runs constantly and frosts up. Adjusting it twice a year, when you clean the back coil, is an easy way to remember.
Roughly a hand width behind and above the cabinet, with the sides clear of tight cupboards. The coil at the back has to shed heat into the air, and a fridge pressed against a wall or boxed in runs the compressor far longer than it needs to. Keep nothing stored on top of it.
Usually because water is sitting somewhere you have not found. The small drain hole at the back of the lower compartment blocks with food particles and mineral deposit from hard water, and stale water collects under the vegetable tray. Clear that hole gently with a cotton bud, and store strong foods in closed containers.
Keep the door shut and leave it alone for a short cut — a full fridge holds its cold for hours if it is not opened. If the supply is cutting in and out repeatedly, or coming back very low, switch it off at the socket and turn it on once supply settles. A correctly rated stabiliser on its own point protects it the rest of the time.
