Most Diwali cleaning fails because it is done in the wrong order and started too late. Here is a three-week plan that spreads the work sensibly and tells you what is genuinely worth handing over.
Every year the same thing happens. The cleaning starts about four days before Diwali, everybody works until midnight, and on the morning of the festival there is still a ladder in the drawing room and a curtain rod nobody had time to put back up.
It is not a shortage of effort. It is a sequencing problem. Cleaning done in the wrong order gets undone by the next job, and the heavy items that need drying time get left for the last two days, when there is none.
Adjust the dates to whichever week Diwali falls in, and remember that Chhath follows only a few days later — so anything you finish properly now saves you twice.
Why the order matters more than the effort
Gravity decides the order. Dust from a ceiling fan falls on the almirah. Dust from the top of the almirah falls on the sofa. Water from a washed wall runs down onto the skirting and the floor. If you mop the floor on day one and clean the fans on day five, you have mopped that floor for nothing.
So the rule is simple: top to bottom, dry work before wet work, and soft furnishings after all the dust has come down.
Bihar adds one more variable — dust. Between the roads, the construction and the dry pre-winter air, a house that is thoroughly cleaned in early October will pick up a visible film again within two weeks. That is normal and it is not a failure of the cleaning. It only means the top-level cleaning belongs near the end, not the beginning.
The three-week timeline

Three weeks out: get rid of things and find the problems
This week is not really cleaning. It is clearing.
- Empty the almirahs, the store room and the loft. Decide what is going out of the house entirely. Cleaning around clutter takes roughly twice as long as cleaning an empty shelf.
- Walk the house and write down every small repair — a tap that drips, a switch that sparks, a fan that wobbles, a door that no longer shuts. These are the jobs that quietly ruin the last week if you leave them.
- Check the ceiling and the wall corners for damp patches left by the monsoon. Mould that has been growing since July will not respond to a quick wipe and it should not be painted over.
- Book anything that involves a technician now. From early October every plumber, electrician and cleaning team in Rohtas fills up, and the first week before Diwali is the worst week to be looking for one. Two weeks out: everything above shoulder height
Ceilings, fans and cobwebs
Start at the highest point in each room and work down. Cobwebs off the ceiling and cornices, then the fan blades. Fan blades hold a surprising weight of greasy dust, particularly in rooms near the kitchen — wipe them with a damp cloth rather than a dry one, or you will simply move the dust into the air and onto the bed.
Safety first: switch the fan off at the board, not just the regulator, before touching the blades, and never work from a plastic stool balanced on a bed. More Diwali injuries come from ladders and stools than from anything else in the house.
Walls, switchboards and high shelves
Dry-dust painted walls with a soft broom wrapped in cloth. Do not soak a distempered wall — it will streak and the patch will show for a year. Wipe switchboards with a barely damp cloth and only with the mains off at that circuit.
Windows, grilles and fly screens
Monsoon leaves a grimy film on grilles and window tracks that needs soaking, not scrubbing. Do this now so the frames are dry before the curtains go back up.
One week out: kitchen, bathrooms and the soft things
The kitchen is the real job
Kitchen grease is the single most underestimated task in the house. The chimney or exhaust filter, the tiles behind the platform, the top of the cabinets and the sides of the fridge all carry a sticky layer that ordinary cleaning cloths just smear around.
Work with a warm solution and give it time to sit rather than scrubbing harder. Pull the fridge and the gas stove out and clean behind them — that gap is where the grease and the cockroaches both live. Empty the sink trap while you are at it.
Sofa, mattresses and curtains
These belong in this week and not the last one, because they need to dry fully. A fabric sofa shampooed on the day before Diwali will still be damp under the cushions when guests arrive, and damp upholstery in autumn picks up a smell within days.
Curtains should come down, go for washing, and go back up only after the walls and windows behind them are finished. Mattresses want vacuuming and a full day of sun on the terrace, turned once.
Bathrooms
Hard groundwater across much of Rohtas and Kaimur leaves white scale and, in iron-rich areas, orange staining on taps, tiles and cistern fittings. That staining is mineral, not dirt, and no amount of ordinary scrubbing shifts it. It needs a descaling approach and patience.
The last two days: finishing only
By now nothing heavy should remain. What is left is floors, glass, mirrors, brass and diyas, door handles, and putting the house back together. Keep this list short deliberately — the last two days always get eaten by cooking, shopping and visitors.
What people always leave too late
- The terrace and stairs. Guests use them and nobody cleans them until the evening before.
- Light fittings. A dusty tube or chandelier makes a freshly cleaned room look dull, and it is a ten-minute job.
- Water tank cleaning. With extra guests and extra cooking, the tank is under more load exactly when nobody wants to think about it.
- Electrical load checks. Extra lighting, extra appliances and the voltage fluctuation we get in the evenings is a bad combination for old wiring.
What is worth handing to a cleaning team
Honestly, most Diwali cleaning does not need professionals. Dusting, clearing, floors and arranging are better done by the family because you know what goes where.
What is worth paying for is the work that needs equipment or height:
- Sofa and mattress cleaning with a machine that extracts rather than just wets the fabric
- Full kitchen degreasing including the chimney
- Bathroom descaling where hard water has built up over years
- Overhead water tank cleaning
- High ceilings, duplex stairwells and anything that needs a proper ladder

Starting four days before is the main reason the work never finishes on time.
Fans first, always. Dust falls downwards, so ceilings, fans, walls and high shelves must be finished before you touch the sofa, the beds or the floor. Mopping early simply means mopping twice. Wet work comes after dry work, and soft furnishings come after all the overhead dust has already come down.
It is worth it if the sofa is fabric and has not been machine-cleaned for a year or more, because a machine extracts the dirt instead of just wetting the fabric. Get it done about a week ahead, not on the last two days, so the cushions dry fully. Current charges are on our rate list.
Use a warm cleaning solution and let it sit on the surface for several minutes instead of scrubbing harder straight away. Grease softens with time and heat, not pressure. Clean the chimney or exhaust filter separately, and pull the fridge and gas stove out so you can reach the gap behind them, which is usually the worst part.
